The Benedict Chronicles: BOOM's Benny BOOM

January 19 2010

"...as plate after plate of fluffy poached eggs, cartilaginous peameal, and lakes of sunshiney goo continued to pile up over time, I realized that if I don't start catalogueing these excursions in some formal manner, a great field of human knowledge would be lost. Hence, the Benedict Chronicles..."

That’s a weird-ass title for a BenChro, but calling a benny “Benny BOOM” is weird-ass anyway, unless said benny delivers a real BOOM.

This one, from BOOM, does not. That doesn’t make it bad, just awkwardly nomenclatured, which is a personal pet peeve but not a universal one, so I should get over it.

BOOM’s Benny BOOM is a smoked-salmon-based creation, light on the hollandaise and served over toast with some spinach. The flavours are delicate and surprisingly scrumptious; I mean this lox was flawless. Plus, the egg gods smiled on BOOM this time around – these were some perfectly poached huevos.

So I really have nothing to complain about here besides the name, and a general sense of underwhelm caused by a benny that had no noteworthy faults, but no significant achievements either. I’ll go right down the middle of the trench and award what is, by Ebert standards, the lowest-ranking thumbs-up:

Incidentally, it bears mentioning that the home fries at BOOM are among the best in the city. This, however, is independent of benny, as they come with other meals.

The BOOM in question is located at 808 College Street in Toronto, though there are two other locations for the franchise in the city. The Benedict Chronicles is an ongoing, non-regular series.
